Government Affairs Specialist

The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R), a national medical society representing over 8,000 physicians has an opening for a Government Affairs Specialist.

In this newly created Washington, D.C.-based position, the Government Affairs Specialist will work with the Academy lobbying firm in the area of health care, physician practice, rehabilitation and disability. This position, under the direction of the Associate Executive Director for Health Policy and Practice Services, will coordinate a broad range of issues related to rehabilitative health care coverage and delivery policies with external entities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitoring legislative and regulatory activity; to be the “eyes and ears” of the Academy in Washington
  • Interacting directly with Congressional, Administration and agency officials and staff as well as Washington counsel and Chicago-based Academy staff
  • Building, nurturing and sustaining effective relationships with key external organizations
  • Attending briefings, Congressional hearings and other appropriate meetings to develop content knowledge to advance the policy interests of the Academy membership
  • Assisting in policy development, legislative and regulatory analysis
  • Assisting in drafting memoranda, testimony, regulatory comments, drafting reports and articles for member education and information

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in public policy, social sciences, law or related discipline; two to four years of government relations experience, demonstrated experience as an effective communicator with excellent organizational, analytical, writing and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with healthcare issues, preferably from a physician perspective. Candidate must have the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, independently follow-through on assignments and be proficient in the Microsoft suite of programs. Salary commensurate with experience.
