AAPM&R Is Proud Sponsor of the Bone and Joint Decade
The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R)
is a proud member of the US Steering Committee of an initiative that has
denoted the years 2000-2010 as the "Bone and Joint Decade." This
global campaign is committed to improving the quality of life for people with
bone and joint disease and injury throughout the world.
In June 2000, President Clinton publicly endorsed this campaign that is
designed to raise awareness of the societal impact of musculoskeletal
conditions and promote prevention of musculoskeletal disorders and injuries.
The governments of more than 20 countries have endorsed the initiative as has
the United Nations.
Musculoskeletal conditions are the most common causes of severe long-term
pain and physical disability, affecting hundreds of millions of people across
the world. As the world’s population ages, more people will be affected, and
the resulting economic burden may outstrip many governments’ ability to
provide patients with access to necessary treatments and rehabilitation.
The Bone and Joint Decade will advance research in prevention, diagnosis,
and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. AAPM&R joins many influential
organizations in supporting this multi-disciplinary international effort.
