Program Description

Medical student interest in PM&R is growing, but exposure to the specialty is still limited. This program has been designed for medical students with an interest in learning more about physiatry and musculoskeletal medicine.

This session is presented during the AAPM&R Annual Assembly since numerous medical schools are located near the meeting’s San Diego location. This offers a perfect time and place to introduce this exciting program.

Medical student outreach is a strategic priority of AAPM&R and a key objective of the Membership Committee and Resident Physician Council who are involved in planning and presenting the session. This program also will appeal to medical students who typically attend the Annual Assembly by providing them a more in-depth look at the specialty through case vignettes, general practice information, and the PM&R residency experience. As a result of participating in this session, medical students would be able to:

  • Differentiate a physiatrist from other physicians

  • Describe typical practice settings and conditions commonly treated by physiatrists

  • Outline residency, education, salary, and lifestyle considerations

  • Evaluate whether PM&R is a good personal and professional fit
