2008 Annual Assembly Educational Program
69th Annual Assembly and Technical Exhibition
November 20-23, 2008
San Diego, California
The AAPM&R Annual Assembly promises an excellent mix of
hands-on and interactive workshops along with dynamic courses focused on all
aspects of the physiatric practice. The content is divided into five Primary
Tracks:
The secondary tracks, which help further identify
the sessions and breadth of the specialty, are as follows:
Highlights of the Educational Program
In addition to finding the most CME hours related to PM&R
all in one place, this year’s educational program will also feature both new
offerings and popular favorites. This year’s Plenary Session will focus on
providing appropriate medical care for servicemen and women returning from war.
In addition, a large course will be included on complementary and alternative
pain medicine.
The sessions developed by PASSOR focus on the upper
quadrant and include a keynote address from W. Ben Kibler, MD, FACSM, who will
also be presenting in several courses. Dr. Kibler is a team physician for
several schools and medical director at the Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine
Center in Kentucky. He specializes in the upper extremity, shoulder pathology,
scapula, and biomechanics of tennis.
Resident's Educational Program
Residents will find a track of their own at this year’s
meeting, including courses on physical examination, diagnostic musculoskeletal
ultrasound, and other basic imaging workshops.

Coding & Billing Workshop
November 18-19
This is a PM&R-specific, one and one-half day workshop
designed to educate physiatrists, office staff, and procedural coders on the
most current coding and billing issues. The sessions will focus on correct
coding of services and procedures to assist practices in maximizing their
reimbursement from third party payers. This will be achieved through the use
of lecture, vignettes, attendee participation, and question and answer
sessions.
The course will focus specifically on the topics of E/M
coding and documentation guidelines, coding for electrodiagnostic and
interventional procedures, ICD-9-CM coding and appealing denied claims. We will
also provide attendees with hands-on coding scenarios and offer time for
questions and answers.
Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound for
Physiatrists: New Perspectives From Different Vantage Points November 19
This course will serve to provide the clinician basic diagnostic ultrasound
skills needed to image various musculoskeletal and eripheral neurovascular
structures. Also, through interaction with other medical disciplines,
attendees will learn how diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound is shaping
the scope of musculoskeletal care.
(New!) Spasticity and Dystonia :
Advanced Assessment and Management Skills for Spasticity, Dystonia and
Related Motor Disorders: An Interactive, Hands-On Workshop November 18-19
This workshop will provide attendees with updates on
the assessment and treatment of motor disorders commonly seen in physiatric
practice, including spasticity, dystonia and other related conditions.
Emphasis will be on the practical aspects of managing these conditions,
instead of the theoretical. A faculty of expert physiatrists and
neurologists will lead discussions and interactive sessions focused on
teaching and updating skills for injection of botulinum toxins and
neurolytic agents, such as anesthetics and phenol.
