Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Musculoskeletal Medicine Educational
Opportunities

AAPM&R has developed an innovative, new suite of educational opportunities focused on the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound in your practice.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a dynamic technology that utilizes high-resolution, real-time imaging of musculoskeletal features for effective diagnostic and interventional procedures. AAPM&R’s three live courses offer hands-on training as well as didactic lessons for extensive training. Self-assessment examinations and online courses provide the opportunity to learn at home during free time and to meet requirements for MOC/3 and licensure.

Participate in one of AAPM&R’s new CME opportunities to find out how musculoskeletal ultrasound can improve performance in your practice and enhance treatment of patients.

Hands-On Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Utlrasound: In-depth Introduction to Uses & Techniques
November 3-4, 2010 – Seattle, WA

This introductory preconference course has sold out every year at the AAPM&R Annual Assembly. In 2010, the course is expanded to a day-and-a-half to allow time for additional presentations and extended hands-on learning.

Course director Nelson Hager, MD, MS, along with a faculty of 17 additional experts, will introduce you to the uses of musculoskeletal ultrasound in a physiatric practice, emphasizing ultrasound use in diagnostics of the upper and lower limb. Hands-on demonstrations and lectures will detail interventional uses and techniques.

Already attending the 2010 Annual Assembly in Seattle? Come in early to attend this course and enhance your learning.

Can’t attend the entire Assembly? Dedicate a day and a half to learn more about musculoskeletal ultrasound and to broaden your practice opportunities.

Diagnostic and Interventional Musculoskeletal Ultrasound of the Lower Extremity
Summer 2011 – Location TBD

The focus of this new advanced-level course is the uses of musculoskeletal ultrasound for the lower extremity. This three-day course offers hands-on diagnostic and interventional training as well as bonus lectures that will prepare you to introduce musculoskeletal ultrasound to your practice.

Bonus lectures will teach you how to:

  • Code for ultrasound-guided procedures
  • Market for referrals
  • Purchase the best musculoskeletal ultrasound machine for your practice

Course directors Gerard Malanga, MD, and Jonathan Halperin, MD, along with a faculty of 14 experts, will teach you to recognize pathologic conditions in the lower extremity. You will learn to perform musculoskeletal ultrasonographic examinations and ultrasound-guided interventional procedures on the hip, knee, foot, and ankle.

Self-Assessment Examinations

The Academy’s new slate of musculoskeletal ultrasound educational products also includes three new MOC approved Self-Assessment Examinations for Practitioners (SAE-Ps). An SAE-P will be released after each of the Academy’s three new live courses.

The SAE-P is a continuing medical education tool designed to guide both PM&R physicians and residents in their self-directed study. Each SAE-P has approximately 40 questions and offers up to 15 hours of CME.

In addition to providing CME hours, SAE-Ps also qualify for the Part II Self Assessment requirements of ABMS Maintenance of Certification™. PM&R physicians are able to assess their comprehension of the self-assessment topic and focused review material. This provides practicing PM&R physicians with a method for direct self-study, efficient use of clinical reference material, and a comprehensive evaluation indicating their individual knowledge gaps.

Available online via the Academy’s online educational portal, acadeME® in 2010 and 2011:

  • Upper Extremity Self-Assessment Exam – October 2010
  • Intro to Ultrasound Self-Assessment Exam – March 2011
  • Lower Extremity Self-Assessment Exam – November 2011
Online Education

Not sure if musculoskeletal ultrasound is right for you? Need to learn more before registering for a course and taking time out of your practice to travel to a meeting? Review the musculoskeletal ultrasound content already available on the Academy’s online educational portal, acadeME. Click here to visit acadeME and to access Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound for the Physiatrist: An Introduction.

This online course helps physicians understand the uses and techniques of diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound. The content is from the introductory level preconference course presented in 2007 and includes audio slide lectures combined with videotaped demonstrations of various upper and lower limb structures, as well as assessment questions to help reinforce your knowledge.

While these online offering are not sufficient for advanced learning and understanding of techniques, they are a great tool to help you learn some basics and determine interest in the content and they are great refreshers for those that have attended live events.
