PM&R is the medical specialty dedicated to maximizing physical function
and quality of life. Each year, people who have experienced disabling
conditions such as: amputations, arthritis, birth defects, brain injuries,
cancer, low back pain, multiple sclerosis, neck pain, repetitive stress
injuries, spinal cord injuries, sports-related injuries, stroke, tendonitis,
trauma recovery, and work-related injuries seek the help of, and are treated by,
PM&R physicians. Also known as physiatrists, PM&R physicians see patients of all
ages experiencing a wide range of problems that make it difficult to function at
home, in the workplace, or during recreational activities.
PM&R physicians practice in a variety of settings, including major
rehabilitation centers, acute care hospitals, and outpatient environments. Their
approach to patients requires careful listening and observing, but also employs
state-of-the-art technological support to assist in the healing process. In
recent years, the field of PM&R has seen an increased focus on musculoskeletal
medicine and industrial medicine, pain management, sports medicine, and
electrodiagnostic medicine (EMG).
Treating the Whole Person
PM&R physicians treat people, not just symptoms. By evaluating the impact of a
condition on the whole person – medically, socially, emotionally and
vocationally – physiatrists help their patients understand and take control of
their health.
Coordinating Care
PM&R physicians listen to and work with their patients to develop a customized
course of treatment. They are often seen as the team leader responsible for
coordinating a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.
Influential Decision-Makers
PM&R physicians help their patients achieve a successful recovery by working
with other physicians such as neurologists and orthopaedic surgeons, and health
professionals, like physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists
and psychologists. Subsequently, our members have strong purchasing power and
influence a variety of audiences. If not the final decision-maker, a PM&R
physician’s recommendation is often sought prior to the purchase of products,
services, and various types of equipment.
Your Partner in PM&R
Today more than ever – strategic partnerships between companies and medical
societies are producing significant dividends. The American Academy of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) is the largest and most influential medical
specialty society serving the needs of over 7,500 physicians who specialize in
physical medicine and rehabilitation; AAPM&R members represent approximately 90
percent of all US physiatrists and physicians from more than 40 countries.
Corporate partners can maximize exposure in 2008 by supporting the Academy’s
many industry opportunities. Whether an exhibitor, corporate supporter,
advertiser – or all three – AAPM&R offers a variety of dynamic and
cost-effective ways to reach key customers and prospects year-round, including:
