Self-Assessment Exam for Practitioners (SAE-P)

Needs Assessment

The field of physical medicine and rehabilitation is constantly evolving. Continued self-assessment on the most relevant clinical topics to the specialty are a necessary tool to keep PM&R physicians up-to-date on the most current research and trends and to identify areas for personal knowledge acquisition.

Additionally, self-assessments are required for physicians seeking to maintain their Board Certification. Physicians who are ABPMR certified and complete the SAE-P can earn up to 15 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM per topic. Nearly all Academy members are Board Certified, and most use this as a means of meeting the self-assessment requirements mandated by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR).

Program Details

The SAE-P is a continuing medical education tool designed to guide both physiatrists and residents in physical medicine and rehabilitation in their self-directed assessment. Each SAE-P has approximately 40 questions.

Self-Assessment topics mirror the Study Guide topics, rotating annually to cover the breadth of the field of PM&R. This complement to the Study Guide text is part two of the comprehensive tool widely recognized by the specialty as the go-to guide for clinical updates.

These easy-to-use self-assessments are invaluable to any physiatrist, whether studying for the PM&R boards, earning CME credit via the self-assessment exam, or staying informed about the latest clinical developments.

The questions are derived from the Study Guide text and are crafted by experienced question writers.

Upcoming topics include:

2008
• Congenital and Acquired Brain Injury
• Interventions in Chronic Pain Management

2009
• Rehabilitation of Stroke and Neurodegenerative Disorders
• Sports and Performing Arts Medicine

2010
• Pediatrics

Delivery Method

A hard copy of the Self-Assessment is included in the Study Guide. This support opportunity is for the electronic version, hosted online via the Academē site. This version of the SAE-P is interactive, offering questions and multiple answer options (including distracters). Once the individual answers the question, the correct response is displayed, including explanation and references.

Each SAE-P topic is designated for a maximum of 15 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM and fulfills the requirement for Part II of ABMS Maintenance of CertificationTM set forth by the American Board of PM&R (Life-Long Learning and Self-Assessment).

Product Life-Cycle

Each SAE-P is worth a maximum of 15 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM per topic and is offered for a minimum of three years.

Attendees/Users

In 2007, current issues of the Study Guides were accessed nearly 2000 times collectively by physiatrists.

Grant Request

The Academy is requesting an unrestricted educational grant in the amount of $25,000 to support the development of the product.

This grant request is open to multiple supporters.
