AAPM&R Sponsorship Opportunity:

Sports Medicine Board Exam Review Course

Needs Assessment

In September 2006, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) approved the application from the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR) to grant sports medicine subspecialty certification. ABPMR is one of five boards approved for this certification, which also includes the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), and the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM).

In January 2007, the Academy surveyed 4,201 physiatrists to gauge the level of interest in this new subspecialty and evaluate the need for producing a board examination preparation course or other educational tool, to help physiatrists better prepare for the examination. Survey results pointed to a clear need for education around the sports medicine subspecialty examination, especially among those physiatrists finishing residency training within the past 10 years.

The certifying sports medicine examination includes subject matter that physiatrists may not necessarily be familiar with (such as dermatology or psychiatric disorders). It is important to note 24% of those who sat for the sports subspecialty board exam during its first offering failed. Because of this, many physiatrists may need access to preparatory courses or materials to prepare adequately for the examination.

Currently, there are no courses offered by other boards or societies designed specifically to prepare physicians for the sports medicine examination. However, a variety of clinical courses exist that are recommended as good preparation.

Program Details

The Academy has assembled experts in the field of sports medicine to deliver an exceptional prep course for those physicians planning to sit for the Sports Medicine Subspecialty Board Exams. Course content will offer a refresher for participants on sports medicine topics. In addition, to fully prepare registrants for ALL segments of the exam, leaders in primary care medicine are also included on the faculty to cover some general topics less familiar to PM&R physicians such as dermatology, infectious disease, and pulmonary issues.

2008 Practice Test: Sports Medicine Subspecialty Exam

Approximately 100 questions will be posted on AAPM&R’s new online learning portal, Academē. As participants answer the practice test questions online, they will receive instant feedback including the answer and links to the reference material for each item.

Enduring Materials

References to the questions could be made available separately in these two formats:

  1. CD-ROM of Course Slides and Audio
Professionally edited and made available on the AAPM&R Web site and/or Academē site for purchase.

  2. Course Handouts
Course handouts delve more deeply into the subject matter than the slide presentations. These handouts are available for purchase on CD-ROM; however, attendees of the course receive them free of charge as part of their course registration.

Delivery Method

The live course will be hosted in Atlanta in May 2008. Enduring materials can be accessed via the Academē site beginning in June.

Product Life-Cycle

The live course will occur once and may re-run depending on interest. Enduring materials will be available for three years.

Attendees/Users

All Sports Medicine Board Review products will be available to physicians and medical professionals. The target audience is members in practice five or more years with more than 20% of their practice focusing on sports medicine. We expect more than 100 attendees at the live course and estimate 1000+ will use the online practice test, which will be live on the Academē site for no less than three years.
