January Marks One-Year Anniversary of Member Councils
Since their inception in January 2009, Member Councils have ignited member enthusiasm and participation in over 30% of Academy membership. Members have volunteered for leadership and work positions on Advisory and Work Groups to generate ideas and produce topics for educational products including submissions to PM&R, the Academy’s scientific journal. In addition, many Council members have volunteered their time by providing feedback on legislative bills and medical practice issues, while others have utilized Council networking tools to share best practices and to generate clinical and social networking groups to meet the diverse needs of members.
First Annual Business Meeting
Each Council hosted its inaugural business meeting at the AAPM&R 2009 Annual Assembly in Austin, Texas. Hundreds of members gathered to discuss Council business activities as well as their experiences being involved in the new Member Council model in its first year. Council Executive Committee leaders met face-to-face with Council members to educate members on where their areas of expertise can best be coupled with the needs of the diverse specialty of PM&R; they also educated members on how volunteerism can make an impact by helping the Academy meet the needs of the specialty.

Call for Council Advisory and Work Group Nominations
AAPM&R is seeking nominations for volunteers.
Volunteer to be a Leader
Each Member Council has three Vice-Chairs who oversee Advisory Groups on
education, communication, and membership development. Vice-Chairs will appoint
“Advisory Groups” to serve as resources to the Councils in the following key
areas:
-
The Education Advisory Group in each Council will provide input to the
Vice-Chair and the AAPM&R Medical Education Committee on educational needs.
Participants will also develop educational content and products for the
Annual Assembly, journal, newsletter, study guides, practicing curricula,
practice guidelines, enduring materials, and maintenance of certification.
-
The Communication Advisory Group in each Council will produce a
quarterly information letter with the Vice-Chair. Participants will also
encourage submissions to The Physiatrist and maintain a list of research
publications/grant awards.
-
The Membership Development Advisory Group in each Council will work with
the Vice-Chair to promote member recruitment, retention and foster a sense
of community. Participants will also maintain lists of volunteers with
specific expertise who can serve as resources to the Council.
Volunteer to be a Worker
There is a job for everyone! If you would prefer to work in a group with
a task-specific focus, please indicate that preference on the nomination
form. Work Group participation provides an excellent way to be involved in a
Council without the time commitment of a volunteer leadership position.
