AAPM&R Advocates for PM&R Care of America’s Wounded Warriors
AAPM&R has an enduring history of involvement with medical
rehabilitation services for active duty military and veterans. The specialty of
PM&R grew and expanded in response to the needs of returning WWII soldiers. That
history and expertise calls PM&R physicians to care for today’s injured soldiers
throughout their lifetimes.
AAPM&R has taken steps to revitalize its role with the
Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the
Department of Defense (DoD) (see the list of Academy activities below) in planning and providing
rehabilitation services to soldiers. Whether they need treatment for traumatic
brain injuries, amputations, or musculoskeletal conditions, America’s soldiers
will need PM&R care long after they have retired from active duty.
The Academy established the Injured Soldier Task Force in
2007 facilitate their access to essential PM&R care and offer our expertise and
services to the VA and DoD to confront these challenges. The group is chaired by
Stuart Glassman, MD.
The Academy has already supported important federal
legislation and Academy leaders have visited with representatives from
organizations such as Wounded Warriors Project, veterans service organizations
including the Disabled Veterans of America and Paralyzed Veterans to develop a
dialogue on these issues and build an appreciation of these organizations’
perspectives.
