President Signs Legislation to Extend the Therapy Caps Exceptions Process for Two Months

The legislation signed into law on December 23, 2011, that includes a two-month delay in the Medicare physician payment cut also includes a provision that extends the Medicare outpatient therapy caps exceptions process to the $1,880 therapy cap until February 29, 2012. When Congress reconvenes in January, the Academy will focus on continued support for the exceptions’ process as well as work to prevent cuts to physician payments that will be effective March 1, 2012.

In December, more than 300 Academy members sent e-mails or called their members of Congress requesting that the exceptions process be extended. Your continued support makes it possible for the Academy to lead successful grassroots campaigns like this—that bring about change and enhance the practice environment for physiatrists and patients! We thank you for your activism and interest in this important issue.

CMS Postpones Wheelchair Recovery Audit Demos

CMS listens amid concerns expressed by lawmakers and stakeholders, including AAPM&R

On December 29, 2011, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) informed members of Congress that the agency will delay a controversial wheelchair prepayment demonstration project following strong opposition from lawmakers and stakeholders. CMS gave assurances that it will give at least 30 days' notice before the demonstrations begin in seven states.

In late December, the Academy wrote a letter to Acting CMS Administrator Marilyn Travenner urging that the demonstration for "prior authorization" of power mobility devices (PMD) that was scheduled for January 1, 2012, be delayed to provide additional time to ensure that access to PMD was not unnecessarily disrupted for Medicare beneficiaries with mobility impairments.
