AAPM&R Requests Ohio Board of Pharmacy Suspend Compounding Rules

AAPM&R and the Ohio Society of PM&R signed-on to a letter from the Ohio Dermatological Association requesting that the Ohio Board of Pharmacy suspend their compounding rules until after the USP Chapter 797 regulations are finalized. The General Chapter 797 is currently undergoing revision and the regulations will be released for review/comment later this year. The Academy supported an AMA resolution introduced at the House of Delegates meeting requesting among other things, that AMA reaffirm the regulation of compounding in the physician office for the physician’s patients be under the purview of State Medical Boards and not State Pharmacy Boards; and that AMA support the current 2008 USP Ch. 797 sterile compounding rules. The Academy did also respond to a similar issue with the Federation of State Medical Boards, as they considered a resolution regarding compounding in physician offices at their House of Delegates meeting in May. The FSMB ultimately referred the position statement and resolution on compounding of medications back to their board of directors for further study.

Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills. 

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
