New POS Code for Telehealth Services

December 5, 2016

Effective January 1, 2017, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is creating a new point of service (POS) code 02 for use by the physician or practitioner furnishing telehealth services from a distant site. The descriptor for POC code 02 is “The location where health services and health related services are provided or received, through telecommunication technology.” This Telehealth POS code would not apply to originating site facilities billing a facility fee.

Modifiers GT (via interactive audio and video telecommunications systems) and GQ (via an asynchronous telecommunication system) are still required when billing for Medicare Telehealth services. If you bill for Telehealth services with POS code 02, but without the GT or GQ modifier, your MAC will deny the service. Conversely, if you bill for Telehealth services with modifiers GT or GQ, but without POS code 02, your MAC will deny the service.

Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Nov 09, 2020

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills.

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
