Aetna and Humana Merger Blocked by Federal Judge

On Monday, January 23, 2017, it was announced that federal judge, John D. Bates, blocked a proposed merger between Aetna and Humana. The decision brings an end to the lawsuit filed by the Obama administration in July 2016 to halt the merger. In his statement regarding the ruling, Bates noted that, if it had moved forward, the merger would “substantially lessen competition in markets for individual Medicare Advantage plans and health insurance sold on the public exchanges.” A similar case, regarding the proposed merger of insurers Cigna and Anthem, is still pending decision.         

Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills. 

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
