AAPM&R Collaborates with the Medical Association of the State of Alabama to Oppose Direct Access to Physical Therapy (PT) in Alabama

On March 8, 2019, the State Advocacy Subcommittee (SAS) committee sent letters to the Alabama (AL) Senate Health Committee and House Insurance Committee in opposition to Senate Bill 25 and House Bill 50. AAPM&R opposes the bills, as they would remove the need for a medical diagnosis before PT is administered, which could be dangerous and costly to patients. On March 6, AAPM&R sent an advocacy alert to members in AL asking that they also send a grassroots message voicing concern for the bill. AAPM&R collaborated with the Medical Association of the State of Alabama to execute these advocacy efforts. We will provide additional updates as actions on this bill progress.

Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills. 

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
