Awards
In 1999, the PASSOR Board of Governors
and AAPM&R Board of Governors approved a recommendation to create a PASSOR
Distinguished Clinician Award and Distinguished PASSOR Member Award. In
addition, the PASSOR Awards Committee selects the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal
Lectureship.
2007 Recipients
Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Lecture Award
Gerard A. Malanga, MD
The Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Lecture is
presented by a young physiatrist who has demonstrated noteworthy advancement
in the nonsurgical care of low back pain. This prestigious lectureship was
established through the generosity of the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal
Foundation.
Dr. Malanga is a member of Associates in Rehab Medicine
and associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at UMDNJ–New
Jersey Medical School. He is the director of pain management at Overlook
Hospital in Summit, NJ. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports
Medicine; and board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and pain
medicine.
Dr. Malanga served as president of PASSOR from 2000-2001
as well as serving on the board in many positions. He is currently chairman of
the Public Education Committee of the North American Spine Society and a member
of the publication committee. He is also on the editorial board of an
educational Web site, SpineUniverse.com, and Pain Physician.
Dr. Malanga has published over 50 articles and 15 book
chapters regarding various musculoskeletal issues from in-line skating injuries
to the treatment of neck and back pain. He has published two textbooks:
Whiplash and The Scientific Evidence of Musculoskeletal Physical
Examination and has been an invited editor for Occupational Medicine:
State of the Art Reviews on “Low Back Pain” and Spine: State of the Art
Reviews on “Whiplash.” He has expertise in the nonoperative treatment of a
variety of orthopedic disorders including neck and back pain as well as
shoulder, knee, and other sport medicine and musculoskeletal problems. Dr.
Malanga provides sport medicine services to several local NJ high school and
colleges and has served as the head team physician of New Jersey City University
since 1999. He has lectured throughout the country on a variety of topics
including the treatment of neck and low back pain, chronic pain, and many other
orthopedic rehabilitation topics.
PASSOR Distinguished Clinician Award
Larry H. Chou, MD
The PASSOR Distinguished Clinician award honors PASSOR members who have
achieved distinction on the basis of their outstanding performance in
musculoskeletal patient care and their scholarly level of teaching, and have
contributed significantly to the advancement of the specialty through
participation in PASSOR activities.
Larry H. Chou, MD, is the founder, fellowship program director, and medical
director of the non-operative Sports and Spine Rehabilitation Division of
Premier Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Associates, Ltd based in Havertown,
Pennsylvania.
Dr. Chou obtained his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of
Medicine, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor
society. He completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation
at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he also served as chief
resident. He then completed a sports and spine rehabilitation fellowship at
the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Northwestern University Medical
School in Chicago.
From 2000 to 2005, Dr. Chou served as an assistant professor of physical
medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Pennsylvania School of
Medicine. He held an adjunct appointment in the department of orthopaedic
surgery on both the Sports Medicine and Shoulder and Elbow Services, where
he also served as a consultant for the Penn athletes. Dr. Chou currently
continues his affiliation with the University of Pennsylvania as a Clinical
Associate Professor. He is board certified in both physical medicine and
rehabilitation and pain medicine.
As a clinical fellow at RIC, Dr. Chou was selected for the Research Enrichment
Program offered through the Missouri Arthritis Rehabilitation Research and
Training Center funded by National Institute on Disability and
Rehabilitation Research. He has twice won Teacher of the Year honors in the
department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of
Pennsylvania and was also honored to be presented with the First Annual
Scott Nadler, DO Memorial Lecture Award co-sponsored by Procter & Gamble and
Kessler Medical Rehabilitation Research and Education Corporation. He has
given over 85 lectures and workshops, including the PASSOR Spinal Procedures
Workshops, written 14 book chapters, and published 27 peer reviewed journal
articles. He is also an Associate Editor of the recently released textbook
Interventional Spine: An Algorithmic Approach.
Dr. Chou is Musculoskeletal and Joint Vice Chair of the Program Planning
Subcommittee for this year’s AAPM&R Annual Assembly. He has served on
numerous committees within the Academy, including Resident Physician Council
Liaison to PASSOR, and Data Advisory Committee. Within PASSOR, he has served
as PASSOR Liaison to the Member Advisory Group and the Musculoskeletal
Education Committee, Awards Nominating Committee, and the Spinal Procedures
Workshop Planning Committee. In addition, Dr. Chou has served as an Abstract
Reviewer for the North American Spine Society in 2006 and 2007. He has had a
major organizing role in 12 national meetings, highlighted as course
director of the 12th PASSOR Annual Meeting at the Annual Assembly in
Philadelphia.
Dr. Chou has two children, Maxine and Lawson Chou, and wife, Mei-Lun Wang, MD.
Distinguished PASSOR Member Award
David L. Bagnall, MD
The Distinguished PASSOR Member Award honors PASSOR members who have
provided invaluable service to the specialty of PM&R through participation
in PASSOR activities.
David L. Bagnall, MD, is in private practice at RehabNY in Amherst, New York.
He is director of Spine Center of Niagara. Dr. Bagnall is clinical assistant
professor in the department of rehabilitation medicine at State University
of New York at Buffalo and adjunct clinical assistant professor at New York
College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Bagnall received his MD from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
School of Medicine in 1991. He completed his residency in rehabilitation
medicine at Tufts/New England Medical Center, where he served as chief
resident from 1994-1995. The next year he completed a fellowship in spine,
sports and musculoskeletal rehabilitation at Buffalo Spine and Sports
Medicine. He is board certified in PM&R and pain medicine.
President of PASSOR from 2003-2004, Dr. Bagnall served on the PASSOR Board
from 2000-2005 and was course director for the Spinal Procedures Workshops
from 2001-2003. He is currently chair of the AAPM&R Membership Committee and
previously served as chair of the AAPM&R Marketing Committee.
Dr. Bagnall is a peer reviewer for Clinical Journal of Pain, authored
the PASSOR Spinal Procedures Image Atlas, and has made over 50
teaching presentations.
