The PASSOR Medical Education Committee has
comprised this comprehensive listing of fellowships and electives in
musculoskeletal medicine. We compiled this directory from information sent in
by PASSOR members. Thank you for your assistance with this project.
In 1998 PASSOR developed fellowship
guidelines. Over the last several years, there has been a proliferation of
musculoskeletal fellowships throughout the country. There has been a wide
disparity of fellowship qualifications and requirements. The PASSOR Board of
Governors became concerned because there were graduating residents who were
signing onto fellowships and were not getting the training they were
expecting.
These guidelines serve to designate
fellowships as “PASSOR Recognized” which indicates that they meet the minimum
standards set out by the PASSOR Board of Governors to have a fellowship. In
addition, these guidelines further designate the fellowship’s area of focus as
“Spine,” “Sports Medicine,” or “General Musculoskeletal Medicine.” In
order to have a designation, a practice must dedicate at least 33% of its time
to that area. Fellowships may have more than one designation. For a definition
of practice focus, please refer to the PASSOR
Fellowship Guidelines as approved by the PASSOR Board of Governors.
Fellowships without the “PASSOR Recognition”
may be fine fellowships from a learning and exposure standpoint. In these
instances the lack of this designation only means that the fellowship is
lacking in one or more areas considered important by the PASSOR board. Or the
fellowship may not have submitted evidence that they meet the recommended
guidelines. Please refer to the PASSOR
Fellowship Guidelines.
Included in the fellowship listings is
information on the minimum length of time required for an interview. We have
included this information for your reference only. Please note that PASSOR
does not set interview requirements, nor do we monitor this aspect of the
fellowship.
In an increasingly competitive
environment, and with a growing number of diverse “PASSOR Recognized” Programs
offering fellowship training in spine care and musculoskeletal medicine, the
applicant is strongly encouraged to strategize in advance to allow ample time
to interview, visit, and explore the multiple training opportunities. While
interview visits often begin earlier, positions are typically offered by the
Recognized Programs between mid-November and early December of the academic
year prior to the start of the fellowship. Programs located in Florida offer
positions in the late summer or early fall due to lengthier licensure
application processes in their state.
The "PASSOR Recognized" fellowship directors,
acknowledging the growing complexity of the application process, shall provide
their required length of interview visit and anticipated interview and offer
dates for publication in the fellowship directory.
We urge you to remember that we developed
this directory for PASSOR members! We put it together and published it using
your membership dollars. Please do not share the directory. If any
of your colleagues wish to obtain access, please advise them to contact
the Academy national office.
We hope you find this information useful and wish you
well in your pursuits of further education. Please forward any comments or
suggestions concerning content to: PASSOR, 330 North

Enjoy.
