Ride for Rehab Announces Competition Winners

As you may already know, Joel Press, MD, immediate past president of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R), completed a cross-country bicycle ride called the Ride for Rehab. The ride was designed to raise awareness of the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation and to raise funds for outcomes research through the Foundation for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (FPMR).

The AAPM&R Resident Physician Council endorsed Dr. Press’ efforts and held a contest to see which program could raise the most funds. We tallied the total donations each month and watched them grow. Several residency programs held fundraising events that were profiled in past issues of this newsletter:

In the end, we raised a total of $22,623.95 toward outcomes research in PM&R. The top 10 donors are listed below:

Donation Institution
$4,067.22 Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago
$3,861.00 JFK Medical Center
$2,698.00 Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education
$1,088.61 Jefferson Medical College
$1,073.61 University of Washington
$1,050.00 The Ohio State University
$1,000.00 Temple University Hospital
$1,000.00 Long Island Jewish Medical Center
$915.00 Baylor College of Medicine – Houston
$790.00 Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation

The winner (with the most number of donors and the largest amount raised) was the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. In addition, two honorable mention awards were given to the Long Island Jewish program for their “Rock for Rehab” event and to Sinai-Baltimore/Walter Reed for their joint fundraising effort, the “Mini-Ride for Rehab.”

Congratulations are due to organizers at each program: Drs. Daniel Roth and Sarah Eickmeyer at RIC, Drs. Waqaas Quraishi and Kevin Dunn at Long Island Jewish, Dr. Mel Gong at Sinai-Baltimore, and Dr. Jay Pyo at Walter Reed. Thank you for all your support and energy. The future of PM&R is bright with residents like you working hard to promote and raise awareness of our field.
