AAPM&R-RPC: Resident’s Research Packet

Research Proposals, continued

Reasons Why Proposals Fail
  1. The problem is more complex than the investigator realizes – i.e., work can’t be accomplished in the proposed project period. (Note: This often happens when a topic has not been narrowed sufficiently.)

  2. The problem is of insignificant importance or is unlikely to produce any new or useful information.

  3. The proposed research is based on an hypothesis that rests on insufficient evidence or is unsound.

  4. The problem is scientifically premature and warrants, at most, only a pilot study.

  5. The description of the nature of the research is vague and without clear research aims.

  6. The proposed tests, or methods, or scientific procedures are not suited to the stated objective(s).

  7. The statistical aspects of the approach have not been given sufficient consideration.

  8. The approach lacks scientific imagination.

  9. Controls are either inadequately conceived or inadequately described.

  10. The number of observations is insufficient.

  11. Investigator qualifications are not adequate for the research proposed.

  12. The investigator is unfamiliar with recent pertinent literature or methods or both – i.e. literature citations are outdated.

  13. The investigator needs more liaison with colleagues in this field or in similar fields.

  14. The requirements for equipment and/or personnel are unrealistic or inadequately justified.

  15. Funding agency guidelines have not been followed - i.e. type size, page limitations, missing information.
