2008 RPC President’s Welcome
Dear Residents,
The American Academy of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation and the Resident Physician Council (RPC) welcomes you to the
wonderful field of PM&R. I would like to encourage each of you to take full
advantage of the academy’s website and other resources by joining the AAPM&R.
The academy strives to be the leader within the field of PM&R in all facets of
health care. The academy actively promotes patient education, continuing medical
education for its members, public and professional awareness, research, and
lobbying efforts for individuals with disability and decreased function.
Residents receive a reduced annual membership fee of
$70.00 which entitles you to members-only links, academy publications, such as:
The Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, The Physiatrist,
and The PM&R Resident E-Newsletter, and reduced registration fees for the Annual
Assembly and other academy-sponsored educational events.
Throughout your training, resident members (including
interns) are strongly encouraged to develop leadership skills within the academy
by becoming active members in the RPC. The RPC governing council works with
academy staff and leaders in our field on many issues that are important to
residents. For example, we help sponsor a resident day track and job fair at the
annual assembly, we promote the field of physiatry to medical students, and we
have been involved in fund raising efforts for the Foundation for PM&R. In
addition, RPC board members sit on major academy subcommittees such as, medical
education, membership, public and professional awareness, and quality practice
and policy. As current RPC board members graduate, leadership opportunities
become available each year. Past RPC board members have gone on to hold
leadership positions within the academy, including the board of governors.
Applying for AAPM&R membership is easy. Simply complete a
membership
application and return it to the national office. Once you are a member you
are eligible to apply for a leadership position in the RPC. To become involved
in the RPC, please contact the AAPM&R national office by phone, (312) 464-9700,
or email rpcadmin@aapmr.org.
We hope you will take advantage of all that the AAPM&R and
RPC have to offer. If you have any questions about resident issues or how to get
involved with the RPC, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Michael Cicchetti M.D.
