Annual Assembly

Call for Proposals 

Deadline for Submissions: January 3, 2020

AAPM&R invites you to submit your proposals for educational sessions for the 2020 Annual Assembly, being held November 12-15 in San Diego, CA. ALL submissions are due by January 3. Late submissions will not be accepted. 

All listed faculty members are required to complete their own financial disclosure before a proposal can be submitted. Financial disclosures cannot be completed after the deadline, so make sure to plan accordingly. The Program Planning Committee reviews all disclosures in a blinded fashion in order to ensure we have a fair and balanced program.

Guidelines for Submitting Proposals

The Program Planning Committee (PPC) seeks proposals that will incorporate a blend of adult learning styles and cross-cutting themes. In an effort to help guide those who submit sessions, the below criteria is provided to indicate the areas that will be seriously considered during the review process:

  • Topics that are relevant, timely, and/or innovative
  • Multiple presenters (ideally a minimum of 3), preferably from different institutions
  • Applicability to practice; use of real-life cases
  • Formats that will stimulate discussion and/or engage the audience
  • Multidisciplinary or team approaches
  • Topics and faculty that are new and not repetitive from previous years or other sessions
  • A detailed proposal with all required information outlining the topics, speakers, and objectives

The theme for the 2020 Annual Assembly is “Team Physiatry. While clinical topics will continue to be featured, the PPC is also looking to highlight topics that will assist physiatrists in navigating and succeeding in the changing health care environment. Specific topics of interest include:

  • Obesity
  • Population Health
  • Unconscious Bias
  • How to Treat LGBQT Patient
  • How to Build a Dynamic Practice That is Nimble with the Changing Environment

Please note that the Academy receives many more proposals than it can accept in a given year. Your submissions are greatly appreciated and we will do our best to represent the diverse needs of our membership. Feedback will also be provided regarding submissions that are not accepted.

Submission Formats

Education is offered in different formats throughout the Annual Assembly. We are seeking submissions in the following categories:

  • Clinical and Practice Didactic Sessions—lecture-based courses focusing on clinical or practice topics. These sessions will have standard podium, A/V and room set-up.
  • Extended Interactive Symposium Sessions—structured courses focusing on clinical or practice topics that allow faculty to divide participants into groups. These sessions will occur in large rooms set in round tables and should incorporate rotation of participants. These sessions should encourage active learning methods through small group audience participation and discussions. These sessions are not intended outlined to use industry equipment or provide product demonstrations.
  • Live Theater Presentations—presentations designed to cover niche clinical and research topics in the PM&R Pavilion.
  • Learning Center Hands-On Demonstrations—hands-on only demonstrations provide interactive learning experiences focused on fundamental and emerging hands-on skills taking place in the PM&R Pavilion. These demonstrations should be planned for a free-flowing audience.
  • Skills Labs—these 3-hour hands on sessions are designed to provide in-depth training on a specific skill or set of skills, including small-group hands-on or immersive training. Each Skills Lab must incorporate at least 4 hands on stations with a maximum of 8 stations. These sessions will have an additional fee for participants.

Themes and Topics for Tagging

The Program Planning Committee developed a system for tagging content that has the flexibility to embrace more cross-cutting sessions and diverse topics that may not fit in the track system. As proposals are submitted for consideration, each session may be tagged with multiple themes and topics. The specific topics and themes are listed below:
