2020 MIPS Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Exception Applications Due March 31, 2021

To further support clinicians during the COVID-19 public health emergency, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will apply the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Policy to all MIPS eligible clinicians for the 2020 performance period.

CMS also reopened the MIPS Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Exemption application for individuals, groups, virtual groups and Alternative Payment Model entities. The new application deadline is March 31, 2021 at 7 pm (CT).

NOTE: Applications received during this time will not override previously submitted data for individuals, groups and virtual groups.

Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills. 

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
