CMS Finalizes Improvements in Care, Safety, and Consumer Protections for Long-Term Care Facility Residents

On September 29, 2016 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a final rule to make major changes to improve the care and safety of the nearly 1.5 million residents in the more than 15,000 long-term care facilities that participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The final rule aims to reduce unnecessary hospital readmissions and infections, improve the quality of care, and strengthen safety measures for residents in these facilities. CMS believes these changes are an integral part of their commitment to transform our health system to deliver better quality care and spend health care funds strategically, setting high standards for quality and safety in long-term care facilities. Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills. 

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
