Coding and Reimbursement for Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine is an exciting field for physicians as well as patients. In theory, it holds so much promise for rehabilitation, recovery, decreasing pain, and increasing function. Unfortunately, more studies are needed for physicians to have more confidence that these procedures are helpful and appropriate. With that concept in mind, it brings a host of issues to the correct coding of such procedures.

Most CPT® codes billed by providers daily are Category I CPT codes. However, most of the codes for regenerative medicine procedures are Category III CPT codes. These codes are designated as a temporary set of codes reserved for emerging technologies, services, and procedures. Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills. 

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
