AAPM&R Responds to UHC Low Back Pain Program

Members & Publications

November 25, 2019

In late November, your Academy reached out to UnitedHealthcare (UHC) in response to a new low back pain program rolling out nationwide. The program offers patients 3 physical therapy or chiropractic visits for $0 out of pocket as a means to encourage patients to choose non-invasive options for their low back pain treatment. AAPM&R had the opportunity to hear about this program from UHC on a call. The lack of physician involvement in the program, which encourages patients to directly access physical therapy and chiropractic providers, raised significant concerns. We have highlighted these concerns in our letter to UHC and hope to continue dialogue on this issue in the coming months.

Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Nov 09, 2020

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills.

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
