PM&R Residents in Combat Sports Medicine

Jared Levin, MD
PGY-2, Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Bronx, NY

Jared LevinFollowing an apprenticeship with Osric King, MD, assistant attending physician at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Jared Levin, MD, PGY-2 PM&R resident and David Cancel, MD, pediatric rehabilitation attending, have organized a combat sports medicine group that provides medical coverage for local boxing and kickboxing events in the New York City area.

With the goal of delivering improved and free medical coverage for an underserved and physically-demanding collection of sports, the group has already brought independent coverage to local amateur events and is scheduled to cover even more this summer. Local residents in the combat sports medicine group will soon have the opportunity to follow a major kickboxing event in June at Madison Square Garden, working closely with the USA Boxing Commission as well as the New York State Athletic Commission.

Soon, Dr. Levin and Dr. Cancel intend on translating their work into research using martial arts for therapy in children with autism as well as developing concussion clinics with the sports medicine team at Montefiore. The group hopes to continue to create awareness of the need for medical coverage in combat sports. It is certainly a growing field that will require an even stronger rehabilitation presence in the future.
