  • Matthew Bartels, MD, chairman of the department of PM&R at Montefiore Health System, and Stephen Erosa, DO, PGY-3 at Montefiore, co-authored the article, “The Key to Living Better and Longer,” which was published in the U.S. News & World Report Health section. Read more here.

  • On March 14, 2016, the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations held a roundtable discussion on concussion research and treatment. Panelists included experts from the medical, military, athletic, and research communities. One particular expert, David Cifu, MD, AAPM&R past president, PM&R department chair at Virginia Commonwealth University, and AAPM&R Concussion Work Group participant, also attended this roundtable discussion to represent the physiatric approach to care post-concussion.   • Andrew Haig, MD, professor emeritus of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Michigan and president of Haig et al.   • Amy Houtrow, MD, PhD, MPH, associate professor of PM&R and pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh, and Tracy Knippel, MD, PGY-3 resident at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, recently published their research that focuses on the way in which pediatric rehabilitation services are delivered has changed in the last decade.   • Joel Press, MD, AAPM&R past president, has been named the new chairman, department of physiatry and physiatrist-in-chief of the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), effective September 2016. Dr. Press currently works at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), where he has served as medical director of its spine and sports rehabilitation center since 1994. Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills. 

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
