Supporting the Physiatrist, Strengthening the Specialty

Stuart M. Weinstein, MD, was the founding medical editor of SpineLine, a medical publication of the North American Spine Society identified by that organization’s members as one of their top member benefits. He held that position for seven years and also served as senior associate editor of the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine and associate editor of The Spine Journal.

Dr. Weinstein has been an AAPM&R fellow for nearly 20 years and was president of PASSOR from 2004-2005, also serving a total of eight years on the PASSOR Board of Governors. He was awarded the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Lectureship in 2001. Following completion of the PM&R residency program at the University of Washington in 1986, Dr. Weinstein’s career has focused on outpatient musculoskeletal and pain medicine including a strong interest in spinal problems in athletes and therapeutic exercise for people with low back pain. He achieved subspecialty certification in pain medicine in 2003. He is nationally recognized as a leader in the field of musculoskeletal physiatry.

Although his professional activities have defined him primarily as a musculoskeletal physiatrist, Dr. Weinstein’s guiding principle is to enhance the common bonds between the diverse clinical and research interests among the members of AAPM&R. He has been a strong advocate of reuniting the members of the Academy under the physiatric umbrella of functional rehabilitation. “The strength of AAPM&R rests with the diversity of its members. And diversity leads to unique opportunities for communication and connection, not divisiveness and disenfranchisement,” he recently said.

After 18 years in a private physiatric practice in Seattle, Dr. Weinstein and his colleagues joined the department of rehabilitation medicine at the University of Washington as full time clinical faculty in 2005. He is professor of rehabilitation medicine with joint appointments in the departments of orthopaedics and sports medicine, and neurological surgery. He is also the co-director of the physiatric musculoskeletal fellowship program at the University of Washington.

Discussing the future mission of the publication, Dr. Weinstein remarks, “Our goal over time is for this new journal to be seen as an icon within the specialty of PM&R. It will be a vehicle for publishing all areas of primary physiatric research as well as comprehensive reviews, point-counterpoint debates, case reports, ethical legal discussions, and other scientific and practical information.”
