As healthcare continues to evolve, PM&R physicians are increasingly called upon to lead—not only in clinical settings, but across teams, organizations and care systems. Leadership training has become essential for physiatrists who want to advance their careers, influence decision-making and step confidently into roles such as medical director. Yet many physicians find that traditional medical training does not fully prepare them for the operational, strategic and organizational demands of these positions. AAPM&R’s Virtual Medical Directorship Program is designed to bridge that gap, equipping PM&R physicians with the leadership skills, knowledge and practical tools needed to succeed and grow as leaders in today’s complex healthcare environment.

The 2026 Virtual Medical Directorship Program is intended for PM&R physicians who are aspiring medical directors or newly in the role. The dynamic program includes three live, interactive virtual discussions with expert faculty, complemented by engaging online lectures. Key topics include leading change, roles and governing structures, organizational behavior, utilization management and strategies for success. Faculty will also address real-time issues such as CMS/Medicare updates, emerging challenges facing IRFs and SNFs and funding considerations.

2026 Live Virtual Discussion Dates 7-8:15 pm (CT):

  • Wednesday, August 12
  • Wednesday, September 16
  • Wednesday, October 14

Registration will open soon.
