AAPM&R's Inclusion and Engagement Statement

As AAPM&R leads the advancement of physiatry’s impact throughout health care, we will model inclusion and embrace diverse backgrounds and perspectives of those with whom we work and serve.

The Academy is especially committed to creating space for critical conversations, encouraging thoughtful engagement, and promoting policy and initiatives that support the enrichment of our field and the members we serve.

Access, Impact & Opportunity Goals

Goal 1: Commitment and Transparency

The Academy, including its top-level leadership, is committed to fostering an open environment by sharing our progress, including the strategies we use in achieving our goals and the challenges we face in advancing access, impact, and opportunity within physiatry.

Objectives:

  • The Academy is dedicated to being transparent about what we are working on and why we are working on it. 
  • We are committed to engaging our members to work together.
  • We are committed to collaborating across AAPM&R leadership to integrate accessibility into organizational planning and communication. 

Goal 2: Opportunity and Growth

The Academy strives to support our members throughout their career journeys by nurturing a vibrant and inclusive community where emerging and established physiatrists can thrive. Our efforts focus on empowering our members to contribute in a meaningful way to the specialty’s continued growth.

Objectives:

  • Identify engagement and professional growth opportunities for Academy members and support members during career transitions.
  • Support and expand initiatives that foster networking, peer support, and leadership skill-building for all members.
  • Engage all sectors and perspectives in the PM&R community to lead and advance the PM&R BOLD vision for the future success of the specialty.

Goal 3: Resources and Education

The Academy provides educational resources to enhance members' knowledge and skills around inclusion among all members of the Academy. Our goal is to ensure all members have access to these resources to help impact the specialty’s growth.

Objectives:

  • Support sustainable communication to share resources, updates, and best practices on inclusion-related topics.
  • Foster collaboration across the Academy to co-create learning opportunities and resources relevant to inclusion of members.

Goal 4: Welcoming and Equitable Environment

The Academy is dedicated to cultivating a professional culture that is welcoming, respectful, and equitable—where every member feels valued and empowered to share their unique perspectives.

Objectives:

  • Design and implement strategies to enhance member access and engagement.
  • Promote policies and practices that create safe, respectful spaces for all members.
