A Statement on Violence against Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders

The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) condemns racism and expressions of hate, bias, and discrimination in all forms. We, as the Board of Governors, want all members of the PM&R community to know that AAPM&R remains steadfast in its commitment to equity and inclusivity, and respect for human dignity.

To our Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander members, colleagues, and friends: The Board of Governors wishes to express to you that our organizational principles defend against targeting or marginalization of any of our member communities. Please know that we share your grief and mourn with you over the violence and hatred directed at Asian American communities across the country. We stand with you and seek ways to support you as valued members and fellow human beings.

“The most recent violent attack in Atlanta, GA that targeted women of Asian descent has sadly highlighted the long-standing racism against members of the Asian American communities in the United States that has increased since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a medical member organization that is historically steeped in diversity, we stand in solidarity with our Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander members as they, along with their families and communities, continue to endure harassment, discrimination, and violence based on their ethnic heritage.” – Stuart M. Weinstein, MD, AAPM&R President.
