On June 7, 2024, the Academy submitted comments on a proposal from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to improve air travel for wheelchair users. This proposed rule will improve standards for on-board wheelchairs, accessibility services, and wheelchair transportation service issues. Additionally, this proposal will change time requirements for certain accessibility services, notification requirements, and enhance training for air travel staff.
The Academy supports safe and dignified air travel for passengers with disabilities and has a long track record of advocating for the disability community in this space. AAPM&R introduced a resolution in 2023 to the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates requiring the AMA to advocate for expanding air travel accessibility accommodations for wheelchair users, this resolution was passed by the HOD and has become official AMA policy.
The Academy believes that this proposed rule is a positive step forward in protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities, but encourages DOT and other stakeholders to continue to take additional steps to improve air travel accessibility for wheelchair users.
