PM&R physicians are well-positioned to lead in value-based care models because they already focus on many of the outcomes ASM is designed to promote.
Physiatrists emphasize non-operative, patient-centered care that seeks to improve function, reduce pain, and help patients avoid unnecessary procedures and utilization. In many cases, PM&R physicians can help patients manage chronic conditions effectively through rehabilitation, conservative treatment, care coordination, and interdisciplinary support.
PM&R physicians play a critical role in:
- Preventing avoidable surgeries and procedures
- Reducing unnecessary imaging and low-value care
- Coordinating with primary care, orthopedics, pain management, therapy, and behavioral health providers
- Supporting functional recovery and quality of life
- Managing patients longitudinally across multiple settings
As CMS continues to prioritize value-based care, PM&R has an opportunity to demonstrate its impact on cost reduction, patient function, independence, and long-term outcomes.
The ASM provides an important opportunity to reinforce the value of PM&R and ensure that physiatrists are recognized as essential leaders in interdisciplinary and longitudinal care.
