July 29, 2019

Today, July 29, 2019, the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) proposed rule was released. Your Academy is currently reviewing the rule to understand the impact to physiatry. Specifically, we are looking for details related to:

  • New codes for genicular and sacroiliac joint injection and destruction as well as changes to the injection code family that could have implications for the specialty
  • New codes for needle insertion without injection (dry needling).
  • Evaluation and Management (E/M) codes.  Per the 2019 MPFS, documentation and payment changes are set to take effect in 2021. AAPM&R, along with many of the specialty societies and the American Medical Association, has urged CMS to reconsider these changes.  The proposed rule may indicate if CMS is taking these recommendations into consideration.

An update will be sent to AAPM&R members via email very soon. Information will also be posted on www.aapmr.org

Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Nov 09, 2020

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills.

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
