AAPM&R State Advocacy: New York Nurse Practitioners Seek to Remove Collaborative Arrangements with Physicians

On May 17, 2021, your Academy’s State Advocacy Committee released a call to action asking all members in New York to join AAPM&R and the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) in opposing S.3056-A/A.1535-A. The proposed legislative bills would eliminate statutory requirements for nurse practitioners to maintain collaborative arrangements with a physician practicing in the same specialty. The legislation would also eliminate the requirement for a newly practicing nurse practitioner to maintain a written collaborative agreement with a physician. Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills. 

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
