Position Overview

The position will be forward looking and have expertise in current and emerging trends in demonstrating the evidence and value of PM&R in healthcare through quality and research initiatives. The Director will work directly with physician-led committees, providing background on health care quality improvement and outcomes relevant to the practice of rehabilitation medicine and strategizing with the physician leadership on the vision and model moving forward. In addition, the Director will work cross-departmentally to build and implement quality-related resources and quality and research efforts that will support members and show their value in the evolving health care environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct AAPM&R quality and research initiatives, strategies, and relationships and related activities. Specifically, direct the AAPM&R clinical guidance development and maintenance process and guide the organization’s review of external clinical practice guidelines relevant to the specialty.
  • Direct and manage vendors or consultants engaged in AAPM&R quality and related research initiatives. Ensure deliverables are documented and met.
  • Serve as a staff liaison and provide oversight to the Quality and Research Committee structure, guiding committee projects to successful completion, overseeing in person meetings and conference calls. Also, provide necessary support and expertise to other Academy committees and projects as needed.
  • Provide strategic guidance to Academy representatives to external groups related to priority quality and research efforts.
  • Oversee development of Academy comments, position statements, and other communications related to ongoing developments in policies and regulations focused on quality issues. Work closely with health policy, practice, quality, and research staff regarding strategic response to federal regulatory activity that impacts PM&R physicians and/or patients.
  • Collaborate with AAPM&R leaders and members on quality and research endeavors and development of a prioritization approach and interconnection with the visibility of the specialty and outreach to determined target audiences (including hospital systems, other medical specialties, patients, and additional key decision-makers and stakeholders within healthcare). 
  • Responsible for identifying and writing relevant content for Academy publications and its website regarding quality related policies, resources, and initiatives.
  • Serve as principal staff resource for members with concerns, comments, or questions about the Academy’s activities and policies related to the implementation and ramifications of quality reporting requirements and policy evolutions
  • Lead a cross-department team to plan, organize, and implement valued-added resources related to quality and research to help members navigate a changing health care environment.
  • Supervise AAPM&R Quality and Research Coordinator and provide support to other department staff as assigned. As an AAPM&R director, serve as a member of the leadership team with general management responsibilities, including budgeting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Executive Director and CEO/Executive Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required; Masters preferred.
  • 8+ years of direct experience working in health care systems, research, and/or physician practice environment, hospital, rehabilitation facility, or health care organization, or eight to 10 years’ experience in a related health care professional association.
  • Strong leadership abilities and management skills, including 3+ years of experience managing professionals.
  • Ability to effectively develop and implement strategic long-term plans and programs related to quality in health care policy and regulations for the practice of physical medicine and rehabilitation. 
  • Solid understanding of the role of quality initiatives in health care at large.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, proven interpersonal and team skills, and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Superior interpersonal skills, including the ability to work productively with physicians and colleagues from other organizations.
  • Ability to manage, guide, and motivate staff.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate within and across departments in order to achieve both departmental and organizational goals.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and proficiency in navigating and mining Internet resources.

 AAPM&R Offers

Based on experience and skillsets, the salary range for the Director, Quality and Research position is $100,000-$120,000 annually. AAPM&R offers the following benefits:

Hybrid Work Environment

Must have access to Rosemont, IL office biweekly for 5-6 days per month on average.

Estimated Travel

Travel is approximately 10%, including Annual Assembly and in-person committee week day/weekend meetings at Rosemont office. Pre-scheduled evening virtual meetings throughout the year.


Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to sit and stand for sustained periods of time, frequently talk, hear, use hands and fingers to feel, handle, and operate objects or controls, and occasionally stand, bend, stretch, stoop, kneel and crouch. The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, and viewing a computer terminal.
