[FEBRUARY 15, 2018; ROSEMONT, IL] – The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation proudly announces the appointment of Janna L. Friedly, MD, as the incoming Editor-in-Chief of PM&R—the official scientific journal of AAPM&R, beginning with the January 2019 issue.
“It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr. Janna Friedly as the next Editor-in-Chief of PM&R,” said Stuart M. Weinstein, MD, current and founding Editor-in-Chief. “She brings to this position years of experience as an editor, researcher, author, and clinician. Dr. Friedly will expertly lead PM&R through its next decade of evolution to ensure that PM&R is not only the journal of choice for authors and readers within the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, but also recognized across other medical fields.”
Dr. Friedly is a board-certified physiatrist and associate professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, as well as the medical director of the outpatient Rehabilitation Medicine clinics and the Amputee Rehabilitation Program at Harborview Medical Center. She also serves as co-director of the Comparative Effectiveness, Cost and Outcomes Research Center at the University of Washington. Friedly is a renowned researcher and has received numerous grants for her work related to back and amputation-related pain. She was lead author of a research paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Friedly has received numerous awards, including the PASSOR Award for Outstanding Musculoskeletal Research, Best Clinical Abstract, International Spine Intervention Society’s 22nd Annual Meeting, and the Top Doctors Award by the Seattle Metropolitan Magazine from 2013-2017.

Under Dr. Friedly’s leadership, PM&R will continue its growth trajectory to position itself as the journal of choice for physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as a valuable source for practitioners across other medical specialties. She will employ a 4-pronged approach to help achieve this vision by promoting: interdisciplinary and innovative research; ethics in research conduct and publishing; education; and intellectual discourse about controversial and conflicting viewpoints regarding evidence.
Friedly Biography
Dr. Friedly received her undergraduate degree in 1994 from Stanford University and her medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in 2001. She completed her residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Washington in 2005. She completed the Rehabilitation Medicine Scientist Training Program (RMSTP) K12 fellowship in 2008. She has been a clinician scientist with the University of Washington since 2008.
Dr. Friedly is involved in administration at the University of Washington, and has served as a member-at-large on HMC's Medical Executive Committee and was a past medical staff president. Friedly is currently serving as an at-large member of the UW Physicians Board of Trustees and on the Executive Committee. She is listed in "The Best Doctors in America" and has been awarded numerous accolades within the UW system, including the Outstanding Resident Award and the UW Medicine PRAISE Award.
