On April 3, AAPM&R joined the Multisociety Pain Workgroup (MPW) to urge Medicare contractors to reconsider classifying ultrasound guidance for trigger point injections (TPIs) as investigational, emphasizing its importance for patient safety and procedural accuracy. The MPW argues that ultrasound is particularly critical in high-risk or deep anatomical regions where inaccurate needle placement can cause serious injury. The MPW supports covering ultrasound guidance in certain settings to reduce adverse events, improve localization of target muscles and maintain the diagnostic and therapeutic value of TPIs for Medicare beneficiaries.
