The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R), the premier professional association for rehabilitation physicians, has an immediate opening for a Manager, Physician Payment and Policy and to join our team. We are working a hybrid schedule with 2 days required in our Rosemont, IL office.

General Summary:
A forward-thinking health care association professional with experience in physician payment and value-based care. Serves as staff liaison for the Innovative Payment and Practice Models Committee, engaging in advocacy and member education related to alternative payment models. Supports AAPM&R representatives at meetings of the AMA CPT Editorial Panel. Advocates for members, including PM&R physicians in private practice, by interfacing with payors and regulators and offering payment and coverage support to members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Innovative Payment and Practice Models Committee (35%)
- Serves as a staff liaison to the Innovative Payment and Practice Models Committee.Liaison duties include establishing annual priorities, recruiting members, reviewing and synthesizing Committee deliverables and background materials, planning in person meetings and conference calls, setting meeting agendas, preparing minutes, and budgets.
- Promotes collaboration where appropriate with regulatory bodies, payers, other medical specialties, and other key stakeholders.Represents the Academy at meetings with regulatory agencies as well as with partnering medical specialties.
CPT Editorial Panel (25%)
- Directs AAPM&R’s participation in the AMA’s CPT Editorial Panel activity to ensure effective representation for physical medicine and rehabilitation.
- Analyzes code change proposals submitted for the three annual CPT Panel meetings, providing guidance and recommendations to the AAPM&R member liaisons to CPT.
- Assesses opportunities for development of new CPT codes to support the work of AAPM&R’s members.
- Forms relationships with key stakeholders and medical society counterparts to advance AAPM&R priorities.
- Supports AAPM&R member liaisons to CPT in their reporting to the Reimbursement and Policy Review Committee.
Private Payor Policy Advocacy and Relations (10%)
- Establishes and maintains relationships with private payor staff and medical directors with an emphasis on engaging medical directors trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
- Provides payment policy support to Academy members, to include payor relations, payment policy advocacy, and coding and payment policy education.
Pain Management Work (10%)
- Serves as the health policy lead on pain management including developing position statements and comment letters on issues impacting PM&R physicians and patients and serving as the Academy’s staff liaison to relevant external workgroups including the AMA Substance Abuse and Pain Care Task Force.
Health Policy Department Responsibilities (20%)
- Leads the development and dissemination of member education deliverables, such as news articles or webinars, related to value-based care and payment innovation, CPT, pain management, and payor policy.
- Serves as a contributing member of the HPPS team, providing support to the Reimbursement and Policy Review Committee, Health Policy, Practice, and Advocacy Committee, and Practice Management Strategic Planning Committee as needed.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a health policy, health care economics, public health or public policy related field.
- Experience with physician billing and coding is desirable.
- Three or more years of direct experience in a health care field preferably with a medical specialty society, hospital, rehabilitation organization, or health insurance company.
- Previous experience with CPT Editorial Panel highly desirable.
Estimated Travel:
- 5% annually.
- Position includes occasional evening conference calls and weekend meetings.
